Bhutan: Entering into Bhutan

Entering into Bhutan
By AIR
The convenient way for tourists to enter Bhutan is by air. Bhutan’s national airline, Druk Air is the only airline that operates flight into and from Paro (Bhutan). All flights to Bhutan fly into Paro, which is the Kingdom’s only airport. Druk Air operates flights to Paro (Bhutan) from New Delhi, Kolkota, Bangkok, Dhaka, Kathmandu and Yangoon. There are three flights in a week between Kathmandu and Delhi and five flights per week between Kolkota and Bangkok. During festival season Druk Air arranges additional flights accordingly. Weather is unpredictable during monsoon period and can delay flights so; travelers are advised to include an extra day in their program.
By Road or Overland
Another way to enter Bhutan is by road through Phuentsholing the gateway town which is connected by road with the Indian state of West Bengal.
Bagdogra is the closest Indian airport to Bhutan. Flights from Kolkotta or Delhi to Bagdogra are available. From Bagdogra, the entry point in Bhutan is at Phuentsholing, on the border of India and Bhutan. It is a 4-5 hour drive from Bagdogra airport to Phuentsholing on the border. Travel from Darjeeling or Gangtok (Sikkim) to Phuensholing will take about 7 hours. From Phuentsholing to Thimphu or Paro it takes approximately 6 hours.
